Southend Taps Into The Pour-Your-Own-Beer Bar Trend

Charlotte’s Southend Community is prepping for a 100% self-pour beer and wine saloon, slated to open in early September 2017, Hoppin’. Hoppin' is bringing a new concept to Charlotte, with a revolutionary system that allows patrons to pour their brew by the ounce.

With this self-serve system there will be no bartenders or servers to tip, so consumers can use that extra cash to indulge in another round with their friends. Pour yourself a sample or an entire pint, the whole experience behind this movement is to explore different brews in a relaxing environment where you can taste a little bit of this, a little bit of that, and find what kind of beer you truly enjoy most.

Currently a blank shell (shown above before construction), Hoppin’s 4700 square foot building will open with 50 beers and 10 wines on their self-pouring tap systems. They will also offer two outdoor patios and a large projection screen for various sports games.

Hoppin’ will offer dual levels of entertainment space. Downstairs will house 35 beers and 10 wines on tap, with plenty of TV’s and seating areas. Hop on up to the second floor loft and discover 15 more taps, games, soft seating, and an aerial view of the stage which will have live music performances.

The floor plan has been designed and construction has already begun! Hoppin’ will be located at 1402 Winnifred Street, Charlotte NC 28203. Be sure to save the date for this September!

SkillPop: A Charlotte Original Spreading Nationwide

SkillPop—the latest craze creating big waves in Charlotte. This locally founded company offers fun, engaging, pop-up classes throughout the community to teach new skills, give you the basics on a new hobby, and provide an awesome setting to kick back with your friends or meet new people.

If you’re like me, that inner middle schooler who still thinks she’s too-cool-for-school cringes at the word, “classes,” but these aren’t boring lectures given by professors who spit too much. These are interactive, hands-on demonstrations in skills you’ll actually be excited about.

Want to know how to capture jaw-dropping photos with your DSLR? They’ve got a Photography Basics class for that. Interested in upping your handwriting skills to Pinterest-worthy penmanship? SkillPop offers Handlettering, Beginning Calligraphy, and Brush Lettering. Like to eat while you learn? Artisan Breadmaking and Cookie Decorating Essentials are calling your name.

It all started in September of 2015 when SkillPop hosted its first class: Handlettering with Kaley Olson. Kaley's seminar is still offered and has become one of the most popular classes—her creations could even make your grandma's perfect cursive drool with jealousy. In April, 43 classes were held and the number grows every month. In the short two-year time span the company has existed, they’ve held over 450 classes to 7,000 students.

In fact, the company is growing so much, they recently expanded to Raleigh and just completed a “Road Trip Tour,” hosting classes in other cities and scouting out new locations. The most popular classes fill up fast, within just a few hours of being posted. Hint, hint:  sign up for the SkillPop Newsletter. You’ll be the first to be notified when new classes are posted.

There’s a reason SkillPop is growing so quickly and Charlotteans love their classes. In short, it’s FUN. Why take your friends to the brewery (again) when you can start your path to fame together in a Podcasting Essentials class? They’re also the perfect setting for parent-child hangouts, (Mother’s Day, anyone?) and a super creative way to impress a first date. (If you took a woman to a Chocolate Appreciation Class, you could most definitely count on a second date. Just sayin’….)

It’s not just what you learn in a SkillPop class that’s so enticing, but where. The classes are held in unique locations all over the city. Usually, the spaces are geared toward the nature of the class. For instance, Photography Basics is held at the Google Fiber building in First Ward, so you can step right outside and practice what you’ve learned against Charlotte’s skyline views. Beginner Hip Hop, on the other hand, is held at Xtend Barre, the perfect fitness space to perfect your new moves.

The next time you and your friends are scouting the city for a worthwhile event, checkout SkillPop’s class list. Learn, laugh, have a blast, and tell them EatWorkPlay sent you!

Mother's Day Gifts You Can Buy While At Work

Mother’s Day is FAST approaching… As in, you’ve got just four days left to find the perfect gift for dear ol’ Mama.

Don’t have time to run out? Here are some great options you can order right from your desktop at work. (We’ll wager a bet you’re sitting there right now procrastination as you read this. Your secret’s safe with us.)

Cheryl’s Cookies

Super soft cookie, amazing buttery icing, adorably festive decorations. Cheryl’s wider variety of packages makes choosing the ideal gift as easy as pie... Er, cookies, duh. If you’re mom doesn’t thoroughly enjoy indulging in these baked goods, she probably doesn’t have any taste buds.

Shari’s Berries

For the mom who claims she wants a healthy option but would pick a chocolate milkshake over a salad any day, send some Shari’s Berries her way. Sweet, fresh strawberries covered in rich chocolate, chocolate chips, or sugar. It’s a definite win.

From You Flowers

Clichés be damned; flowers are the most classic gift you could offer your mom. Choosing this traditional option tells your mother how timeless you believe her to be. And at From You Flowers, you can create your own bouquet with flowers picked especially for her.

Jeni’s Ice Cream

Yes, it’s ice cream—delivered frozen. (Some of the most amazing ice cream you’ve ever tasted, we might add.) It’ll arrive perfectly shipped in all its ice-cold glory so your mother can praise your creative thinking while spooning away some Brown Butter Almond Brittle.

Mother’s Day Brunch

Lastly, just take your mama out! Nothing will make her happier than spending some good, quality time with you, her precious baby. (Aww.) Check out our latest Charlotte Foodie Adventures article for restaurants hosting brunch specifically for mother’s day.

There was once a point in her life when your mother woke up at 3:00am just to pull you from your crib and be pooped on. So go celebrate her and show her some love in return. :)

Chic Cinco: Dress to Impress with Ease

Ah, the classic dilemma: there’s a happy hour after work (like the EatWorkPlay’s Chic Cinco de Mayo this Friday,) so do you dress for the happy hour or for work? Well, since I can’t in good conscience tell you to ignore dressing appropriately for your job… and since I also love an excuse to dress up… I say dress for both! Let’s check out some things you can wear straight from the office to the happy hour and dress to impress at both.

Look #1: Girly

I love a good deal. And I love being able to shop until I drop with a smaller carbon footprint (#HappyLateEarthDay.) So, naturally, I’m obsessed with consignment stores. J.T. Posh, one of my personal favorites, has a HUGE selection of girly dresses.

This Tory Burch dress is priced at just $79. That’s less than a third of normal retail. And it’s so cute, you could wear it to countless different occasions. But there’s a catch—it’s consignment, so there’s only one available!

Didn’t snag this dress in time? Not to worry. There certainly isn’t a shortage of floral dresses in the spring, so find one that best fits your style. My personal favorites for finding hidden officewear: bevello and Madewell.

Look #2: Menswear

The fabric and pattern of this outfit is traditionally found in men’s attire, especially if paired with a black blazer, but the fact that it’s a dress and the larger-than-life bow give it a feminine appeal. Best of both worlds? I think so.

Snag this dress ($98) and any black blazer you like at the Banana Republic in Southpark. It’s 30% off until Saturday!

Look #3: Casual Fridays

The general rule for the office is no more than one animal print item per day. These pants from J. Crew ($98) are adorable all on their own. There’s really no need to do anything to this outfit except put on some heels and a top (light blue or black) and walk out the door. Keeping the rest of your outfit subtle helps this statement piece be the talk of the town.

J. Crew has become my go-to for finding great fitting pants appropriate for work (or at least appropriate for casual Fridays) but that are different than the black slacks I wear twice (okay, at least twice) a week.

But remember, the most important thing about style is for you to love what you’re wearing. Happy shopping and see you at Le Meridian on Friday for EWP’s #CLTMixer, Chic Cinco de Mayo!

RiRa: Not Just Another Irish Pub

If you’ve never been to a locals-only Irish pub in New York City, let me tell you what to expect. You’ll be walking down the sidewalk, awkwardly swerving to avoid people who aren’t paying attention while car horns blare and someone’s second hand smoke burns your throat. You veer into a tucked away door and Bam! Hustle and bustle gone. The big-city static is replaced with cozy lighting, friendly faces, and the best darn homecooked aromas wafting through the air.

Looking for this experience in Charlotte? Welcome to RiRa Irish Pub. Whenever you find yourself tired of the noise and crowds of Uptown, pull up a chair at the bar in this inviting space and indulge in some of the best Irish cuisine in town.

It seems that any ol’ restaurateur can slap a Celtic knot on their logo and call their bar an Irish pub, but one bite of their “gammy” shepherd’s pie exposes the illusion. RiRa, on the other hand, is one of the oldest bars in Charlotte and has spent the last twenty years bringing a piece of The Emerald Isle right into the heart of the Queen City. Authenticity abounds from the dishes prepared to the very people serving them. RiRa even has a visa program that allows Irish citizens to work at the pub for a year, so you know when your Guinness is poured with a hearty, “Sláinte!,” it’s the real deal.

The intimate atmosphere of the bar will win you over right after entering (if the gorgeous chandelier above doesn’t do it first. Look up!) The lighting is soft and warm and the décor is true to Ireland, including intricate stonework and antique whiskey bottles. If you’re visiting with a larger party, head upstairs to another full bar with a little more space to roam.

What’s the best meal to order from RiRa’s menu? A.N.Y.T.H.I.N.G. If you’re hunting traditional Irish food, try the Banger Bites—oven-baked, puff pastry wrapped Irish pork sausages served with Lusty Monk mustard from Asheville. Or try the Irish Chicken Curry—all natural chicken sautéed with bell peppers, fresh herbs, and onions, in imported McDonnell’s Irish curry sauce. And of course, nothing is quite as traditional as Fish & Chips—beer-battered Icelandic haddock fillet served with house-made tartar sauce over hand cut fries and a wedge of lemon.

If you’re looking for an American tie-in to your meal, check out the Lamb Burger—a house ground, rosemary infused VA lamb patty topped with charred red onion, arugula, goat cheese and Irish curry aioli on a locally made brioche bun.

RiRa is the perfect spot for a casual business lunch, a cozy first date, or just do what my husband and I love to do—sit at the bar, munch on bangers and fried pickles, and reminisce about making all our wedding guests dance to Gaelic Storm’s “Tell Me Ma.” Purchase a Foodie Adventures Passport for a special discount on RiRa’s incredible cuisine, and throw back a shot of Jameson for us. Sláinte!

(See more of RiRa in our latest YouTube video.) (Photos via RiRa's website and Instagram.)

RuRu's Tacos & Tequila: Globally Inspired Tacos

We all love ourselves a good “Taco Tuesday” and we all have our go-to restaurant for amazing Mexican food. Enter:  RuRu’s Tacos & Tequila, the spicy joint becoming every Charlottean’s new favorite.

RuRu’s is tucked away on 3rd Street right between the Elizabeth and Dilworth neighborhoods. The pseudo front entrance is actually their back deck—a large, inviting place with colorful umbrellas, Italian lights, and even (yaaas!) a full bar. They’ve got that whole Mexican-vacation-vibe down pat. Southerners love dining outside, after all, and you’ll love sharing a meal with friends in this space.

If you’re an air-conditioning lover, the inside of RuRu’s won’t disappoint either. It’s cozy yet modern, like it can’t decide if it wants to be a rustic barn or a Tuscan mansion. The bar room, for example, boasts exposed beams running across the ceiling paired leaded glass windows with arched transoms. Did they hire Joanna Gaines to decorate? We’re not sure, but we’re willing to take bets. Read the full story on how they acquired this beautiful estate here.

The service is worthy of writing home about as well. The servers are knowledgeable about the menu items, quick to suggest their favorite dishes, and will take care of your every need while visiting.

But the best part about RuRu’s Tacos & Tequila? The FOOD. You’ve never had tacos quite like this before. You can charm your tastebuds with a classic Latin taco and be absolutely satisfied with your choice… OR… You can surprise them with a taco inspired by Korean, American, or Greek cuisine. Try the “Uncle Buck” taco—fried oysters, Asian slaw, salsa roja, jalapeños, and paprika. Or check out the “I’ll Have What She’s Having”—grilled mahi mahi, lettuce, avocado, cilantro, and pineapple salsa.

Photo via RuRu's Tacos & Tequila

Photo via RuRu's Tacos & Tequila

Yes, you guess right, all their menu items are named after (only the most memorable) movie quotes. “I’m in a Glass Case of Emotion.” “Stage Five Clinger.” “Fat Guy in a Little Coat.” If you did nothing while visiting but read the menu at RuRu’s, you’d still have a good time and a few laughs.

My personal food recommendation is for the "Billy Ray Valentine" starter. It’s hands-down the best queso in the Queen City and great for sharing. Creamy cheese, chorizo sausage, and spicy corn relish slathered over sea-salted tortilla chips. I’m sure there’s a good reason for its name but it could otherwise be dubbed as the “Get In My Belly.”

So next Taco Tuesday, or Margarita Monday, Salsa Sunday, Fiesta Friday, or any day of the week really, be sure to grab a buddy and check out the amazing meals at RuRu's Tacos & Tequila. Purchase a Foodie Passport today for an amazing discount and be sure to tell them EatWorkPlay sent you!

Georges Brasserie: Bringing French Cuisine to Charlotte

Some of you may be wondering: “What is a brasserie?” A brasserie is an informal French restaurant, brewery, or saloon. Charlotte even has its own: Georges Brasserie in South Park’s Piedmont Row.  Georges offers nouvelle and classical French cuisine and strives to welcome customers into an inviting, radiant, and delightful setting.  Clientele feel comfortable whether interested in fine dining, enjoying the raw bar serving local clams, oysters, lobster and more, or sipping a cocktail on the large, awning-covered patio.

Georges Brasserie presents a warm, romantic atmosphere using vibrant accents, elaborate wall hangings, and black and white French photos.  Upon entering, you’ll encounter enormous velvet curtains, an antique French poster, and intimate lighting—you’ll feel like you just left the streets of Paris and stepped into a neighborhood French restaurant. The restaurant has a main dining room with cozy booths, a social bar, a spacious patio area, a raw bar, and a private dining room to suit all your dining needs.

The restaurant’s raw bar will certainly impress with a wide selection including NC middle neck clams, oysters, mussels, ceviche, lobster and shrimp. Patrons can choose between east and west coast oysters, only $1 every Friday from 3:00-7:00pm!

Don’t skip the tuna crudo with serrano peppers, lemon basil, Szechuan peppercorn, and wasabi mayonette for a spicy touch.  If you're savoring an appetizer other than seafood, the cheese and charcuterie boards offer unique specialties including sage infused cheddar cheese, a triple cream brie cheese, and country pate. The French onion soup gratinee is the ideal comfort food and a table favorite with its gruyere crust and French bread croutons.

Chef Phillip visited our table to talk about some of his favorite dishes. The chili charred pork belly is an appetizer not to be overlooked. Chef Phillip brines the pork belly for five days, then slow cooks it for 14-16 hours at 200 degrees creating a tender consistency. The pork belly is accompanied by hot pepper jam, black garlic aioli, shaved brussels, and basil oil for a savory yet fiery finish. Chef also recommends the white marble smoked pork chop entrée. The 12 oz. pork chop is applewood smoked and finished with a bourbon cider glaze and sherry apple relish creating a sweet, citrus and salty combination.

Next time you’re looking for the perfect place for a romantic date night or an upscale birthday celebration that won’t break the bank, head to Georges Brasserie. Open seven days a week for dinner, Tuesday-Friday for lunch, and on Sunday for a fabulous brunch buffet. Check out Georges Brasserie and more in the EWP CLT Foodie Passport for amazing deals at these great locations!

Stoke Charlotte Launches Brunch

The Story: Stoke Charlotte, located inside the Marriott in Uptown, is the latest venture of locally known chef, Chris Coleman. His menu is compiled of delectable dishes made with ingredients sourced from Carolina farms and local partners.

The Vibe: As soon as you walk into the lounge circle at the Marriott, you find yourself surrounded by white marble, elegantly designed dual-level seating, and a completely open, airy atmosphere. The restaurant mimics this theme and has a fully exposed kitchen. Seriously, you can see everything… it’s amazingly beautiful and awe-inspiring to watch their skilled chefs put together your feast.

To the right you’ll see Stoke Bar: a handsomely designed saloon that specializes in craft cocktails like no others in the city. As soon as you browse their libations menu, you’ll notice how they mix in music history, quirky phrases, and hidden messages throughout. (I love this!)

Featured here is “The Day the Music Died” made with gin, campari, aperol, bianco vermouth, and grapefruit. A little history lesson: The Day the Music Died was February 3, 1959. Rock & Roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson died in a plane crash. When you visit Stoke Charlotte, make sure to try one of their crafted cocktails because “That’ll be the day” you find your favorite indulgence.

Why Go Here?: My favorite part, THE FOOD. Stoke proudly makes every single little morsel from scratch in their open kitchen for your viewing pleasure. They source their ingredients from local farmers as much as possible and keep their menu seasonal, which means you are getting some of the highest quality, freshest elements on your plate.  Make sure to use your Foodie Passport to indulge in a free dessert!

What’s New: Stoke has fired-up their 600-degree wood-fired oven for BRUNCH! Every weekend you can now find an extravagant buffet with a rotating selection of meat, seafood, vegetables, casseroles, platters of house-baked goodies, and omelets made to order.

Craving yo’ carbs? Stoke’s got you covered. Guests will be greeted with an array of granola, yogurt, muffins, biscuits, and toast with compound butters, jams, and jellies. Oh, along with some cheese for good measure.

Since Mr. Brunch and Miss Mimosa are best friends, Stoke has created a one of a kind build-your-own Mimosa bar, featuring an array of ingredients (including fresh fruits and syrups) to customize your glass of bubbly to your likings. Yes, please!

For those of you who need a caffeine fix, make sure to order a pint of Nitro Cold Brew Coffee from Stoke Bar (think Guinness meets coffee). This Andante Blend Brew is sourced from Forte Legato Roasting Company in Fort Mill, SC. We had the pleasure of visiting their roasting facility last week and I’m hooked. I’ve even ordered some of their coffee from their website to brew at home. Ooh la-la.

The Deets: Brunch is served Saturday and Sunday from 7am - 3pm. Guests can look forward to pampering themselves with classics like fried chicken and waffles or eggs benedict, along with the traditional bacon, sausage, grits, gravy, breakfast potatoes, and more. Adults are $25 (or $50 for bottomless mimosas) and kids are just $12. Make sure to bring your Foodie Passport and tell them EatWorkPlayCLT sent you!

Stoke is located at 100 W Trade St, Charlotte NC.
