They Could Make It Up If They Tried—And Did
Improve your weekend with improv at the Charlotte Comedy Theater.
It seems like every weekend the quest for finding something new and fun continues. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Netflix, but I can only binge-watch Daredevil and Breaking Bad reruns so many time. So, last weekend I decided to check out an improv show at the Charlotte Comedy Theater and I highly recommend you do as well.
If you’re not familiar with an improv comedy show, it’s where performers go onstage and make up scenes on the spot, based on audience suggestions. Think “Whose Line Is It Anyways?” The best part about improv is you never see the same thing twice. Each show is funny, entertaining, and different—making it a perfect option for those of us seeking new and exciting.
Now, the Charlotte Comedy Theater has been performing in the Queen City for more than 15 years. Shows are currently held in the VIP room of Wet Willes at the AvidXchange Music Factory, and are performed every Friday and Saturday at 8pm.
The Charlotte Comedy Theater was voted one of “The 50 Best Comedy Clubs in America” by Click It Ticket.
That’s not just improv comedy clubs, but all comedy clubs. Pretty impressive. And, after watching them perform, I could tell why. (Quick note: I’ve seen my fair share of improv comedy shows in Los Angeles and Chicago, and this one was right up there at the top).
Plus, tickets are only $10, cash only, which is a great value for live entertainment.
The show was 90 minutes of hilarity and I enjoyed every minute of it.
The first 30 minutes consisted of fast pace games, where the performers demonstrated their quick wit and funny chops.
Then, they switched to long-form improv, which is a famous Chicago style of improv that is more about quick scenes than playing games. The beauty of this form is that each scene seems loosely related to each other, but then, they all connect to the central theme at the end. It’s really pretty incredible to watch and the team gets excited it well.
Finally, they ended the show with more side-splitting games. I haven’t laughed that hard in a while.
The venue itself has a unique feel for an improv show. The VIP room of Wet Willes is decked out with leather couches, allowing you to enjoy the show like a boss. The room fits probably about 30-40 people, so the setting is pretty intimate. And, since it’s at Wet Willes, food and frozen adult beverages are available for purchase.
Viva la alcoholic slushy!
If you’re not a boozer don’t worry—there’s no drink minimum and you’re welcome to order soda or water.
So, if you’re looking to get out of the house and do something fun, definitely check out the Charlotte Comedy Theater. Every show is different and the funny is made up on the spot.
Oh, and FYI—shows are 21 and up and for adults only. That doesn’t mean everything is swearing and dirty jokes, just that the performers don’t sensor themselves and they might drop an Fbomb here or there. For only $10 a ticket, you’re not going to find a better live entertainment value.
I had a great time and I’m sure you will too.
They also offer improv classes, so if learning improv sounds like something fun, check out their website for more info.
