10 Pointers to Effective Communication

By: Christine Edwards

What is TED Talk?

Most of us have seen videos on Netflix, YouTube or attended the TED Talk event here in Charlotte last October. Motivational speakers change peoples lives by helping those in need. And we are all in need of something right? Whether you seek guidance in your personal or professional life, there are over 5 million videos on YouTube under the word "motivational".

The TED Mission

A global community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, lives and, ultimately, the world. Our agenda is to make great ideas accessible and spark conversation.

Start Your Day Off Right

I did something out of the ordinary the other day during my morning routine. I checked my email and came across a TED Talk. I pressed play and listened while I got ready for work. The topic was about how to have a better conversation. My mind was open and clear first thing in the morning. It was a perfect way to start the day.

In any job or relationship, you must have effective communication to achieve positive results.

In this video by Celeste Headlee, she explains that we can all can get better at having productive conversations. It has over 4.7 million views so I'd say it's pretty valuable.

Can you check off all 10 of these pointers in one conversation?

1 | Don't multitask.

2 | Don't pontificate.

3 | Use open-ended questions.

4 | Go with the flow.

5 | If you don't know, say that you don't know.

6 | Don't equate your experience with theirs.

7 | Try not to repeat yourself.

8 | Stay out of the weeds.

9 | Listen.

10 | Be brief.

Quotes to Live By

Dr. Stephen R. Covey | "Most of us don't listen with the intent to understand. We listen with the intent to reply."
Nathaniel Branden | "The first step towards change is awareness. The second step is acceptance."
