Slathered, Smoked and Served: City Barbeque Opens in Matthews

Judge All You Want… Award-Winning Barbeque has smoked its way into Matthews.

The 29th location of City Barbeque is set to open on Monday, February 27th. This will be their second location in the Charlotte Region and certainly not the last! They plan to also open restaurants in the University Area (3rd location) and Huntersville (4th location).

Each City Barbeque is designed and modeled with their general manager to create a unique atmosphere that you’ll only find at that restaurant’s location. Meet Shane Wolfe {the GM} and his wife, Jessica.

Shane is from Belmont and has a special place in his heart for antiques.  His love is showcased throughout the store with vintage license plates, distressed signage, and various maps on the walls about Charlotte’s history.

Oh, and see that pig outside? Her name is Pigalicious and she’s a unique addition that you’ll only find at Shane’s City Barbeque. Make sure to stop by and say hello to her on your way in.

There’s one rule at City Barbeque: everything must be made from scratch on a daily basis. Nothing is bagged, processed or boiled and there are no microwaves or walk-in freezers. They do, however, have one small freezer for two great reasons:

1.      Peach cobbler tastes better with frozen peaches…. so they freeze their peaches.

2.      All excess products that are not consumed during operating hours are placed in that freezer and donated to a local food rescue each night.

Eat Good ~ Do Good ~ Give Back

Now let’s chat a little about their food. First and foremost, I must mention that I tried the Best Brisket I’ve Ever Had during their media preview. All of their meats are smoked “low and slow” with Carolina Hickory between 13-20 hours; or until they are fall-off-the-bone-fantastic.

This is Christian; he’s a trainer at City Barbeque and has a serious obsession with that brisket I mentioned above. City Barbeque flies him all over the county so he can share his passion for their melt-in-your-mouth smoked meats by training employees.

Some of their most popular menu items include:

More Cowbell:

Brisket topped with pepper & onions, smoked provolone and creamy horseradish sauce; piled high on grilled Texas toast. (Mic drop.)

Smoked Turkey Salad:

National award-winning smoked turkey, spring mix, cucumbers, tomatoes, cheese, onions and cranberries.

Lo Lo’s Pulled Pork:

Marinated in swine wine and topped with creamy coleslaw.

Baked Beans with Brisket:

This recipe took 14 YEARS to perfect. In my opinion, they nailed it!

Judge’s Sampler:

Enough for two! 1/4 chicken, 1/2 slab ribs, pulled pork, full-cut brisket, 2 sides, 2 slices of corn bread, and Texas toast. Holy moly. Dinner is served.

Because some like it saucy….

(I’ve tried them all and they’re FABULOUS.)

City Barbeque in Matthews will host an official Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, March 4th. The event includes kid’s entertainment, giveaways, and appearances by Sir Purr, the Top Cats, and Carolina Panthers’ PurrCussionists. And of course, guests will be able to sample a wide assortment of their delicious foods.

Giving back to the community: 10% of sales during the Grand Opening Celebration will go to Bright Blessings – a local non-profit focused on bringing jobs, care, and hope to homeless and impoverished children. In addition, City Barbeque will be selling t-shirts for $3 each during the event and donating 100% of those sales to Bright Blessings.

City Barbeque has a healthy dose of backyard Q they can’t wait to share with you and the entire community. Make sure to follow them on social media on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.
