If there’s one thing every true urban-dweller needs to know, it’s where to find the best hot dog in the city.

Enter JJ’s Red Hots. This little dive offers way more than your average cheese coney (although their coneys are pretty drool-worthy.) These wieners range from classic deliciousness to wildly creative dishes. Prepare to salivate.

For those of you who need a dog that represents your geographical preference, JJ’s has you covered. Order the Joliet Jake and enjoy a timeless Chicago-style dog. Or sink your teeth into the Char Heel—a Carolina style dog with chili, slaw, onions, and mustard. Feeling a fiesta? The Sonoran comes Southwestern style with borracho beans, fire-grilled salsa, cilantro-lime crema, and shredded cheese.

Let’s talk specialties. As a self-proclaimed Hot Dog Connoisseur, I recommend the Dog Walks into a Bar. This bad boy was the 12 Days of Hot Dogs winner, and it’s obvious why. A pretzel roll, beer queso, fried jalapenos, and hot mustard slathered over an all beef dog. If you need something a little less spicy, the Southern Girl is the bee’s knees. It comes with pimento cheese, coleslaw, and blonde mustard. Or, go foreign and try the Hot Thai with peanut butter, honey, and sriracha.

You may have seen JJ’s Red Hots’ recent appearance on Diner’s Drive-In’s and Dives. For the restaurants he visits, Guy Fieri hunts down originality, and that’s exactly why JJ’s made the cut. In addition to hot dogs, JJ’s serve sausages and brats that are crafted in-house. They also prepare their chili, which makes the cheese coney one of their best sellers.

One thing has not been featured on the DD&D episode:  JJ’s Rocket Sauce. This is handcrafted mayonnaise made with fresh lime juice and sriracha. No matter what you order, you can ask for it “Real Nice” to add this magical creation to your dog. So get the Rocket Sauce; it’s “out of this world.” But really, it’s so good; I don’t even feel sorry about that ridiculous pun.

Speaking of ridiculous space references, how about JJ’s excellent atmosphere? The hospitable staff will make you feel right at home and take care of your order with a genuine smile. Urban, eclectic décor covers the walls for an all-American vibe. Have your choice of booths or tables, but why settle for either when you can eat outside? For sunny weather days, JJ’s offers rooftop seating overlooking East Boulevard.

So the next time you’re looking for that classic American meal to curb your patriotic appetite, head to JJ’s Red Hots. Your taste buds will thank you.
