Recess Charlotte

When I first moved to Charlotte, I didn’t know where any of the fun things to do in Charlotte were. I didn’t know which neighborhood was which and had no idea where the hangout spots that didn’t involve buying bottle service and VIP tables were either. I soon began to become familiar with the Uptown scene as I worked at Bank of America’s Corporate Office and then slowly but surely started exploring the NoDa scene where I lived. NoDa had some lovely gems but was just a bit more artsy than I was. Then through a couple of new found friends, I was introduced to area with a nice mix of the chic vibes of Uptown and how eclectic the neighborhood of NoDa can be, Plaza Midwood. Today, we are graced with the new and exciting local businesses such as Recess Charlotte.

Plaza Midwood’s New Gem: Recess Charlotte

If you haven’t heard already, Charlotte has a new playground in the heart of Plaza Midwood. We went in to speak with the owner, Markus Hunter, to find out just what his new found local business, “Recess,” has changed since it’s opening a couple of months back. Here you can expect to enjoy local craft Beers like Catawba, Sweet Water, Hop Drop N’ Roll, Cocoa Loco, and other local favorites from Charlotte’s most notable breweries. If you’re looking for another option besides beer, make sure to try out the Bacardi Bucket (one of my personal favorites).

What is Recess and Why Did You Start it?

Markus: Recess Charlotte is a Recess- Themed, Games and Drinks Sports Bar, Grill in Plaza Midwood. I wanted to change things up and take the leap from Corporate America to Entrepreneurship and give a new hangout spot that is different from the typical sports bar, club or restaurant.

What makes you all unique?

Markus: Our location in Plaza Midwood, fun atmosphere, game theme, and ability to encourage guests to socialize throughout the day makes us unique. It’s a great place to mingle, maybe meet a significant other or even take someone out for a first date.

What has changed since you all first opened?

When we first opened, we were a full-service restaurant that served drinks but we’ve scaled back on our food offerings. Now, we’re focused more on the atmosphere and providing small shareable food items. This allows us to be geared more towards the fun atmosphere.

If you’re looking for more insight on Recess and what they’re all about, they recently joined us on FOX 46 Charlotte and taught us how to make the Bacardi Bucket at home! Check them out and let us know what you think!
