We all love ourselves a good “Taco Tuesday” and we all have our go-to restaurant for amazing Mexican food. Enter: RuRu’s Tacos & Tequila, the spicy joint becoming every Charlottean’s new favorite.
RuRu’s is tucked away on 3rd Street right between the Elizabeth and Dilworth neighborhoods. The pseudo front entrance is actually their back deck—a large, inviting place with colorful umbrellas, Italian lights, and even (yaaas!) a full bar. They’ve got that whole Mexican-vacation-vibe down pat. Southerners love dining outside, after all, and you’ll love sharing a meal with friends in this space.
If you’re an air-conditioning lover, the inside of RuRu’s won’t disappoint either. It’s cozy yet modern, like it can’t decide if it wants to be a rustic barn or a Tuscan mansion. The bar room, for example, boasts exposed beams running across the ceiling paired leaded glass windows with arched transoms. Did they hire Joanna Gaines to decorate? We’re not sure, but we’re willing to take bets. Read the full story on how they acquired this beautiful estate here.
The service is worthy of writing home about as well. The servers are knowledgeable about the menu items, quick to suggest their favorite dishes, and will take care of your every need while visiting.
But the best part about RuRu’s Tacos & Tequila? The FOOD. You’ve never had tacos quite like this before. You can charm your tastebuds with a classic Latin taco and be absolutely satisfied with your choice… OR… You can surprise them with a taco inspired by Korean, American, or Greek cuisine. Try the “Uncle Buck” taco—fried oysters, Asian slaw, salsa roja, jalapeños, and paprika. Or check out the “I’ll Have What She’s Having”—grilled mahi mahi, lettuce, avocado, cilantro, and pineapple salsa.
Yes, you guess right, all their menu items are named after (only the most memorable) movie quotes. “I’m in a Glass Case of Emotion.” “Stage Five Clinger.” “Fat Guy in a Little Coat.” If you did nothing while visiting but read the menu at RuRu’s, you’d still have a good time and a few laughs.
My personal food recommendation is for the “Billy Ray Valentine” starter. It’s hands-down the best queso in the Queen City and great for sharing. Creamy cheese, chorizo sausage, and spicy corn relish slathered over sea-salted tortilla chips. I’m sure there’s a good reason for its name but it could otherwise be dubbed as the “Get In My Belly.”
